The Rum Shack is a Caribbean bar, canteen and music, performance and community space venue in Glasgow's Southside.

After working with the team previously on branding and promotions for their street food venture, I was asked to work on the company branding, menu design and some illustration work for the bar’s interiors.

Working closely with one of the founders of the company who has family from Trinidad & Tobago, we delved into Caribbean culture and West Indian folklore to create a brand style and a series of bespoke illustrations that reflected the heritage.

The bar became an immediate success in the Southside of Glasgow, serving authentic Caribbean food and hosting events ranging from stand up comedy gigs, theatre performances, artisan markets and community based events.

Project approach

The approach for the logo was a simple one, varied letterpress characters from old rum marketing posters with Caribbean blues and contrasting yellow.

We spent a lot of time researching Caribbean culture and West Indian folklore, exploring a look and style for the branding and the bars interior space.

By researching mythical characters and elements of visual culture several things stood out and were the basis for the bars bespoke interior artwork.

Additional Assets

During our research we came across old maps of the West Indies and the Caribbean. This formed the basis for a 17ft wall vinyl as a focal point of the dining area of the bar.

Additional Assets

Colourful and bright imagery has been a huge part of The Rum Shack identity, and events and promotions from birthday weekenders to Burns’ Night celebrations have been designed to reflect these elements of the brand styling.

Brian Austin

Rum Shack Director

Can't speak highly enough of Paul. He was invaluable in terms of developing our branding. Very easy to work with in terms of understanding the concept, streamlining the brief and most importantly delivering on time. The fact that he is the designer we use most regularly says it all.
